Review | Maybelline The Nudes Pallete

Maybe there’s a hormonal imbalance in my system, maybe I’ve just been popping too much lactase…whatever it is, I’ve somehow convinced myself, a self professed tomboy, to dabble in the world of eye makeup.

Enter: Walmart.

The brightly lit cosmetic aisles stacked endlessly with what’s essentially pre-packaged face paint is seriously overwhelming. Sounds become amplified, perfume bottles smell sickly, and that girl expertly maneuvering her way between tubes of liquid foundation? She senses your fear. So what’s a girl to do? Blindly reach for a makeup palette and cross yo’ fingers, is what.

CASE STUDY
Maybelline the Nudes Pallete

Cost: $14 (which I think is an okay price for what it is).

Initial impression: I really enjoyed the palette’s colour
selection. I could definitely see myself wearing these neutrals for everyday, or creating more dramatic looks with the help of the black and greys. The packaging is compact which is great for when you’re stranded on a desert Island, and the need for vanity is greater than survival. It includes a small mirror (that I’ll probably never use) and a mini eye shadow brush (which I did use). Upon caressing the shades, I deemed the texture to be pretty standard – powdery like a freshly baked doughnut.

Interesting fact: this palette organizes its colours by quads, trios and duos in complimenting colours. This is great for those of us who believe colouring our lids entirely in charcoal black is a look. The photos below illustrate how our gal Maybelline suggests using the palette:

I think the layout of colours is so, so clever and subtle on Maybelline’s part. Let’s just take a moment to revel in the beauty of this – it takes work to come up with something so  well curated! And yes, it took over 4 hours to edit these photos. The Macbook equivalent of paint kept crashing on me. N o  b i g g i e.

Some shades turned out a lot lighter than expected, but you can definitely build up the colours for darker pigmentation, or simply wet your brush. One thing I noticed is the fallout after applying my makeup (even after tapping my brush on the palette). Despite this, the colours were super easy to apply onto my lids. Due to my olive skin, it did require some layering, but I didn’t find it to be too much of a problem!

Now the question you’ve all been waiting for: will a re-purchase be in order? Only time will tell! I’ll leave it up to fate, and my ability to remain calm the next time I enter another cosmetics aisle.

TL;DR (too long; didn’t read)
Pros:
Affordable, compact for travelling, great colour selection, colours organized by complimenting colours (with instructions on the back to help beginners).
Cons: Fallout and lower pigmentation for darker skin types.
Other: Walmart scares me a little

So true! I don’t think I’m daring enough to venture past nudes – who knows though, maybe one day I’ll decide purple eyeshadow is my thing (or not, probably not). Knowing your sister likes this palette though reassures me that my review wasn’t too off the mark haha. AND THANK YOU, you’re making me blush!!! Hope you’re having a spectacular end of September. Can you believe October is approaching?

I can totally relate to the overwhelming experience of cosmetic shopping! I walk into Sephora and am caught somewhere in between loving all the ADORABLE packaging ploys, and trying to prevent myself form having a seizure do to all the bright lights.

    (P.S. Walmart scares me too)

Glad you came out on top 🙂

Thank you, someone else who understands the struggle!! And girl, I’m still at the drugstore level. Maybe someday I’ll conquer Sephora hahaha. Hope you have a lovely night (or day)!
