Cleaning Your Room: The Do’s and Don’ts

If you’re anything like me, keeping your room clean is an ongoing struggle. It’s been 19 years, guys. You’d think I would’ve perfected the art of cleaning by now. But, alas, the hair follicles pile up and the dust mites always seem to find their way back. It’s gotten to the point where I’ll sometimes sleep in the living room to escape the mess. After bracing myself though, I finally finished cleaning my room for this week! So naturally, I decided it was time I doled out some highly unqualified advice. Here are some things I learned along the way:

Do: Dance around your room and do a little wiggle. Throwing on a pair of headphones and putting on a playlist is one of my favourite ways to motivate myself to start cleaning!

Don’t: Take selfies of yourself, mid-way through cleaning the mirror. “It’s for snapchat” you say. “It’ll only take a second,” you say. Next thing you know, you’re 64 selfies deep, sitting in a pile of empty juice boxes and wondering where the time went. Don’t risk it. Keep a Lysol wipe gripped firmly in each hand and just n e v e r let go.

It’s worse than that, sister. I broke the cardinal rule and snapped some mirror selfies.
Do: Throw your hair up into pigtails and pretend you’re Lunette from The Big Comfy Couch – “Who made this big mess?!” Also, the 10 second cleanup is the single most useful trick to motivating yourself to clean. Just ask my mom, even my stubborn little toddler self followed along! If you’re not Canadian and have no clue what I’m talking about, click here.

Don’t: Take a break to eat those chocolate chip muffins your mom just made. After one bite, you’re never going back.

I could go for another one of these right now…
Do: Throw out all the items and papers you no longer need. Like broken paper clips, your agenda from middle school and that overflowing bag of love letters you’ve received over the years -it’s gotta go.

Don’t: Throw out that autographed photo of Brian Melo from 5th grade. It’s a reminder of the simpler times. Back when selfie sticks didn’t exist, and celebrities probably had carpal tunnel from all the guitar picks and human limbs they had to sign.

And lastly, do clean your room a little bit each day. It’s so much better than that moment of blind panic when you realize your friends are coming over, and your room looks like something off the set of Twister!

Until next time,

I feel comforted knowing you’re right there with me on keeping a clean room haha! And you’re so right…the days I do make my bed, I’m so much more motivated to start my day. Will definitely try to make this a daily ritual (key word, try – eek). Thanks so much for stopping by Jill!!
